Raised in a trading port, I'd seen my share of attractive sailors.

But I'd never cared to get to know one, let alone allow one to follow me around, drawing my neighbors' suspicions that I was a seductress.

Until the day I pulled him from the water.

I found him drowned and alone, and I breathed life into him before I knew his name.

But the moment Kye opened his golden-brown eyes, I fell under a spell I couldn't escape-until I found myself trapped under his knife.

He betrayed me to my enemies, this man who owes me his life. And I hate him.

To him, it's a game of power. But to me, it's freedom or captivity.

With every dark gaze, every whispered threat, I find myself drawn to him against my will. But I refuse to fall for him a second time.

He'll have to kill me first.

An addictive and atmospheric start to a gripping new fantasy series.

A Sea of Song and Sirens pulled me in from the very first page. Set in a vividly imagined coastal world, this story blends dark magic, betrayal, and slow-burn romance into a tale that’s as emotionally intense as it is beautifully written.

Maren is a strong, complex heroine who refuses to be anyone’s pawn. When she rescues a mysterious stranger from the sea, she doesn’t expect her act of kindness to become the start of her undoing. Kye maddening, magnetic, and morally grey is as dangerous as he is intriguing, and the chemistry between them is impossible to ignore.

This book delivers everything I love in fantasy romance:

    ✔️ Enemies-to-lovers tension

    ✔️ Ocean-inspired magic and lore

✔️ A fierce, independent female lead

✔️ High stakes and emotional twists

✔️ A romance built on tension, betrayal, and burning questions

As the first in a series, it does a fantastic job laying the foundation without ever dragging. The pacing is tight, the characters are unforgettable, and the final chapters left me desperate for book two.

If you enjoy romantasy with a darker edge, a richly built world, and characters who feel deeply real (even when they're at each other's throats), I highly recommend picking this one up.

Can’t wait to see where this story goes next!

Book Review: Sea of Song and Sirens by Whit Stanfield

    My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Recommendation: This is an easy yes for me, especially if you enjoy mermaid/siren stories that weave together generational trauma, betrayal, feminine rage, and a spicy romance.

    Genre: Fantasy / Romance

Blurb: A drowned stranger she saves becomes the treacherous sailor who betrays her, tangling them in a dangerous pull of desire, vengeance, and a battle for her freedom.

    Spice: 🌶️🌶️

    Emotional Damage: ☠️☠️☠️ /5

    Originality : 🖊️🖊️🖊️🖊️ /5

    Writing: 🥀🥀🥀 /5

    Entertainment Value: 🍿🍿🍿🍿

Likes: The island culture was one of my favorite aspects, particularly the way tattoo earning is treated as something meaningful and rooted in tradition. The siren history and underwater worldbuilding are equally strong, with vivid descriptions that make the ocean feel alive and steeped in its own mythology. Stanfield has a real talent for creating a setting that feels both magical and grounded.

Dislikes: The pacing didn’t quite do it for me. If you were as invested in the romance the way I was, there were stretches where Kye all but vanishes before reappearing again. It doesn’t ruin the story, but it does make the romantic tension feel uneven at times.

Well, colored me obsessed with this series and Whit Stanfield! I am so glad that I have A Sea of Wrath and Scoria to immediately pick up.

It felt like a grown-up fairy tale in the best way. I loved the world building, and the chemistry between Kye and Maren. I cannot wait to get more of that. I really loved Maren and how the story progresses with her. Whit's writing is lush and atmospheric, and I love the lore built into this story. I thought the book was a perfect combination of world building, tension, and action scenes that had me staying up past midnight telling myself: "Just one more chapter."

I'm hooked, and I can't wait to see where this series goes!

Whit Stanfield captures the beautiful line between science and magic and that they are one and the same in a beautiful story that explores rage, manipulation, and love with undertones of fairytale retellings that blend in mythology giving you all the best parts of stories like Moana and Little Mermaid. With mystery and complex characters and relationships. I'm absolutely obsessed with this book! I cannot wait to continue the series!!!

Honestly, I was really enjoying the first third, then confused the second third, and then blown away by the last third. That wild leadup was really something! The world building is excellent , if not a little "tell-y" as the lessons begin. Easy to forgive as it feels very natural to be learning things alongside Maren, and the cast of characters is so enjoyable.

The settings are really fantastic, and I love the transition from small island village to a large kingdom. It's a bit jarring, in exactly the way it should be, as Maren is being torn from a familiar world where she found joys in being mostly alone, to a much bigger world where everything is foreign.

I haven't read many books with sirens or mermaids, as they so often seem to focus on the "monster" aspect of sirens having talons and sharp teeth, almost vampires of the ocean. There is basically none of that in this, though it isn't that the naiads are without their metaphorical "claws." The way their magic and abilities is used and described is perfection!

4.25, as I need a bit more Kye!

Guys! What an outstanding debut novel by Whit. The detail in every aspect of this book is so well thought out and the story is absolutely captivating.

Whit does a beautiful job at blending cultures, languages, myths, traditions, fantasy, and the human world to just suck you right into Leihani and Calder.

Maren is a strong FMC, with the perfect balance of anger and wit, but also naivety and wonder. I love how we really get to spend time seeing Maren's life in Leilani prior to the big twists and plot ramping up. It connected me with her first person POV so much more and the emotions she went through throughout the rest of the book.

Kye is another amazing MMC, with so many sides to him it leaves you on your toes until all the pieces start falling together. Also a big fan of him having golden eyes and chocolate-y hair as a switch up from the standard black hair, blue eyes (definitely still love that though 🤪).

Maren and Kye together are the real definition of what I look for in enemies to lovers. The slow burn romance and the real twists and ups and downs of their relationship was perfect. I am so pumped that book 2 will have them together so much, I need all the passion 😍😍

If you loved the little mermaid growing up, or are just a fan of some good ol' Romantasy, you absolutely must read this!!

I've been struggling to read fantasy for the past few months. Every book seemed to be more of the same… same plots, same types of characters... over and over again.

    ❗️Potential spoilers ahead ❗️

Lord have mercy on any soul that reads this book. You will need a physiotherapist for the whiplash caused as well as a regular therapist for the emotional rollercoaster you’re about to embark on.

    Whit, I applaud you.

You did give plenty of warning about what this book entailed but I still wasn’t ready 😂

This book was everything I hoped for and more.

Gorgeously written with so much back story, lore and detailed descriptions. I just wanted to jump right in to Leihani and Calder. I’ve always adored mermaids (first red headed Disney princess, hello) but the Naiads of ASOSAS are quite unlike anything I’ve ever come across before.

Maren, our FMC, is a little firecracker. Our “witch” of Leihani who, quite frankly, is sick of being branded a witch 😂 (it’s giving Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic vibes when all them nasty kids start chanting). I adore that from the offset she is no damsel in distress and can fight her own battles. She is very head strong and unapologetic whilst also retaining a vulnerable and isolated quality, allowing us to empathise with her struggles.

Kye, our MMC, let’s just say he’s.. difficult. Conflicted. Downright gorgeous. 😂 I’ve had a glimpse, a taste of grovelling Kye and I’m hungry for more (good thing Whit has promised this in book 2 😏😈). Kye was an interesting character to pick apart, especially when a twist that happens later in the book had me questioning EVERYTHING about him.

There are a few side characters that I’m keen to see explored in more detail in future books. Thus far they’ve all contributed to the story as a whole but now I’m just intrigued to see what more they have to offer.

All in all this is a fantastic debut for Whit and I feel like this series is gearing up to become a showstopper if book one is anything to go by.

    If you’re a fan of:

    ✨ Found Family

    ✨ Fantasy Romance

    ✨ Enemies to Lovers

✨ He falls first - but can she trust him?

    ✨ Marriage of Inconvenience

    ✨ Slow Burn

    ✨ Feminine Rage

Then you won’t be disappointed when you add this book to your TBR.

    NO SPOILER
