Summary: Random snapshot scenes, ho?
A lot of people would call Tezuka cold. Stony, even.
It has a lot to do with his facial expressions. Or rather, his marked lack of them.
Fuji has also been described with the same word: cold. With him it refers more to his attitude when he's angered, and not by any absence of emotion. People seem to view Fuji as amiable and kind immediately upon meeting him. And those same people are the ones who view Tezuka as stony and emotionless.
Like most people who are intent on judging people upon first impressions, all of them are wrong.
---
Inui scribbles in his notebook as he pretends to watch the match taking place in front of him. The real focus of his attention are the two others watching, a little off to the side, standing 0.246 cm closer than necessary.
The non-Regulars suddenly start cheering and Inui fails to hear what Fuji says to Tezuka, but whatever it was, Tezuka suddenly turns a healthy shade of pink.
Inui blinks and it's gone, and instead, Tezuka is smiling, a small elusive grin meant only, it seems, for the one beside him.
Inui blinks again and Tezuka has shifted away from Fuji, their distance settling back to the normal 2.5 cm that constitutes Tezuka's comfort zone. When Inui blinks a third time Kikumaru has performed a marvelous Kikumaru Beam, settling the fate of his opponent.
A lot can pass in the blink of an eye, Inui scribbles in his notebook.
---
Oishi knows Tezuka only has a cellular phone because his mother wants him to, so she can check on him from time to time, so he can tell her if he's coming home late or he can ask if there are errands she needs to have done. Tezuka has a cellular phone because his council members routinely ask and remind things via that little glowing screen. Oishi and Inui are, to Inui's knowledge, the only two in the tennis club who know Tezuka's number.
They know it because it's necessary.
So you can imagine Oishi's shock when Tezuka leaves his phone with Oishi for a moment while he's asked to fill out some forms and it begins ringing.
To Oishi's even bigger shock, the name that appears is Fuji Syuusuke.
Oishi's confused, he racks his mind if Fuji has been promoted to some position in school without telling anyone; it would be just like Fuji to do that. Not once does Oishi consider that Fuji's calling in an unofficial capacity, because it's completely unlike Tezuka to promote that kind of thing.
And Oishi's confused even more because he knows that everyone listed in Tezuka's directory have their positions filled in, for instance: Kawami Mitsuro - Treasurer, or Oishi Syuuichiroh - Vice-Captain. The fact that Fuji is listed so simply tells Oishi something, something important that he's known for a long time.
Oishi realizes with a start that Tezuka has returned and claimed his phone. He watches as Tezuka excuses himself to Oishi and apologizes to Fuji via the receiver. Tezuka takes quick steps that bring him outside, beyond Oishi's hearing range. Through the door though, Oishi catches a glimpse of Tezuka's pleased expression just before it closes, and Oishi smiles to himself, though he's confused and still a bit shocked, he's happy all the same, because in Oishi's directory, he's listed Tezuka as "Tezuka Kunimitsu - Friend".
---
Fuji opens the front door and beams up at Tezuka. The other boy's smile is slow and sudden, but it lends a warmth that seems familiar on the terrain of Tezuka's face instead of foreign.
Fuji blinks when Tezuka takes his hand from behind his back and presents Fuji with a bright bouquet of wildflowers. He opens his mouth to thank Tezuka and sees the twinkle in the other boy's eye and wisely shuts up.
"For your mother and your sister," Tezuka says, as Yumiko enters the genkan, wondering what was taking her little brother so long with the visitor.
"They're lovely, Tezuka-kun, thank you," Yumiko coos, crossing her eyes at her little brother as she goes to fetch a vase.
Alone again, Fuji pouts at Tezuka, whose smile shows no sign of growing bigger. Nor, for that matter, disappearing completely, as it is apt to do. It just stays there, unwavering and true, and just for Fuji.
Fuji takes Tezuka's hand and closes the door, and Tezuka takes his other hand from behind his back and proffers a small baby cactus to Fuji, who replaces his pout with a grin and takes it from Tezuka. Then he proceeds to place it on a low table in the hall as he tiptoes and kisses Tezuka, in the middle of his house, in the weekend silence and stillness that Fuji both accepts and abhors (because it reeks of absence and a kind of resentment).
Tezuka doesn't stop smiling as he links both his hands with Fuji's and kisses back, and as quickly as Fuji has tiptoed and initiated the contact Tezuka ends it.
And they stand there, two teenagers with smiles in their eyes and on their lips, and in that moment none of them look like they're made of ice or stone.
