controlled firing area

An area in which ordnance firing is conducted under controlled conditions so as to eliminate hazard to aircraft in flight. See also restricted area.

It's a Controlled Firing Area (CFA) within which missiles, rockets, mortar and tank shells, bullets and other invisible objects present a lethal hazard to nonparticipating aircraft.
