Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (sin: Liver steatosis, Hepatic steatosis,
Fatty infiltration of the liver, Fatty liver) is an independent disease or a syndrome caused by a
fatty infiltration of hepatic cells.
Liver biopsies were performed percutaneously under ultrasound guidance, or laparoscopically during cholecystectomy for patients with ultrasonographic evidence of steatosis, on patients older than 45 years with
fatty infiltration on ultrasound and/or who had persistently abnormal liver function and/or hepatomegaly.
RV dilation was observed along with extensive replacement type fibrosis and
fatty infiltration. Surviving myocytes entrapped within fibrous and fatty tissue showed degenerative changes and abnormal nuclei.
Diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: The diagnosis of NAFLD requires evidence of
fatty infiltration of the liver in the absence of excessive alcohol consumption and of other secondary causes of chronic liver disease.
Ultrasound is the least informative imaging method; however,

fatty infiltration of muscle tissue and compromising selective muscle fibers, or by causing innervation problems.
Some patients in the medical treatment group were told that surgery was not an option because liver biopsy findings showed
fatty infiltration. That was not true.
More rarely, hepatic
fatty infiltration with hepatomegaly, abnormal results of liver function tests and pathologic evidence of hepatocellular damage can be found.
Increased potential to develop into fat cells--and decreased potential to develop into muscle cells --may be an important explanation for the high rate of
fatty infiltration in muscles of patients with chronic rotator cuff tears, even after rotator cuff surgery.
