A generic term for any black jade or similar rock. This may refer to nephrite coloured by microscopic inclusions of dark minerals, also known as black nephrite jade, or a variety of ornamental stones, not true jade, that either consist mostly of intrinsically dark minerals, such as omphacite (omphacite jade) and hornblende (black hornblende jade), or have subordinate black minerals like graphite or iron oxides.
