The 44-year-old is no stranger to the Italian set-up having previously worked with the Italian Under-19 and Under-20 sides in two different spells.

Brunel, who guided Italy to their most successful RBS 6 Nations finish in 2013 where they came fourth, recently called together his players for a meeting in Milan to discuss their plans this season.

The Azzurri face Australia, Fiji and Argentina on home soil in November before they get their 2014 RBS 6 Nations campaign underway against Grand Slam champions Wales in February.

And Sanguin couldn’t hide his delight at being given the chance not only to coach at the highest level but also reunite with some of the young stars he helped nurture in his previous roles.

"Coming back to work for the FIR for me is to go back to being part of a family,” said Sanguin.

“Having worked for many years in the youth sector I'm excited to be able to now compare it with the highest level in our sport. 

“ In recent seasons the national team has achieved important results under the guidance of Jacques Brunel and there is a medium-term project that leads to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

“I cannot be more thrilled to be part of it and it is great to also find in the group so many quality kids with whom I have had the opportunity to work with at the academy level.”
