Odd Future, wtf?

I have lost all respect for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All.

In addition to having a band name that’s far too long, their actions at this year’s Voodoo fest were despicable.

I realize they’re young, (all of the band members are under 21,) but as far as I’m concerned, they’re old enough to know this is pretty shitty.

If they get to attack photographers while the photographers are doing their job, does this mean photographers can attack them while they’re taking a class exam?

Big Man on Campus: The New Canon 1D X

It was rumored for weeks that Canon would make a big announcement in mid-October, and in this case, the rumors were true.  Introducing the Canon 1D X…

The folks over at Canon rumors posted the official press release with quite a few photos.  Planet 5D has a nice recap which puts the press release in normal English, (with all the marketing lingo aside.)  Lastly, Image Sensors World has a breakdown of just the sensor in the new camera.  For me, a major letdown is the fact that the camera isn’t coming out ’til March of 2012; a good 5 months of waiting.

On the Nikon side of things, there’s been lots of talk about a possible D800 or D4.  The earliest announcement wouldn’t come until Nikon’s next press conference on October 26th.  With any major announcements, expect a post here.

Photographer Spotlight: James Nachtwey

James nachtwey

See that guy with the gun? And then that other guy with a camera about 3 feet in front of him? That's called amazing.

In attempt to think of snazzy – or perhaps even jazzy? – material for the photo blog, I thought I’d highlight some photographers that have made a legitimate influence on either my photography or how I approach photography.

Weirdly enough, I first came to find out about James Nachtwey when searching for my next camera purchase. After much internet stumbling, I came across the wikipedia page for Canon’s 1D mark II. What intrigued me was the “users” section. “Everyone knows Tim Burton, but who was this other guy?” I thought. If you follow that link you’ll find one hell of a bio.

While I would love to post some of his work, I have the feeling that we can legally do that. Instead I would HIGHLY recommend you google search “James Nachtwey.” He’s covered a lot of topics; don’t know where to start? Definitely check out his work for Time Magzine on 9/11. Granted it’s not the happy-go-lucky type of photos that we all typically enjoy on the internet, but I think they’re pretty important from a historical and photographic standpoint.

…and for those curious – which I’m assuming is a whole… zero… people – I never figured out my next DSLR purchase. Suggestions?

Rumors, rumors, rumors (cue Fleetwood Mac)

The first bit is yet another Canon tidbit:

Again, the folks at canonrumors.com have divulged that the 5D mark III should be released around late October or November.  (Basically, sometime towards the end of this year.)   Reveille photographer Zach Breaux shoots with an OG 5D while Ms. Emily Slack recently bought a 5D mark II, so it’s definitely something we’re all keeping an eye on, even though none of us will be able to afford it for some time.

Not to be too Canon-centric, the folks at nikonrumors.com have stated that Nikon will be making two camera announcements in September.  One is supposedly DSLR related, which is always fun.  The other will most likely be Nikon’s first foray into a mirror-less camera.

I dig mirror-less cameras, (especially the Sony NEX-5,) and think they would be great for travel, but in terms of photojournalist work, I couldn’t justify buying one.

New Semester, New Editor

The photo staff is notorious for not updating the photo blog.  However, the powers-that-be are determined that we improve, so here is the first, (or second?) post of the semester.

One thing that will be different from this semester, (as opposed to past semesters,) is that posts won’t simply be a picture, but will also feature news and opinions on the photography world.

First bit of news? Although we shoot exclusively on Nikon equipment at the Reveille, a few of the photographers use Canon gear.  In light of that is some Canon news:  the internet has been abuzz that Canon could potentially release a new DSLR on August 23rd.

However the folks at www.canonrumors.com have reported that Canon will only be releasing info on some point and shoots, and that any DSLR news won’t be coming until October.  That means if you like to stay on the cutting-edge of photography technology, you have a few more weeks to wait until anything comes out of the Canon camp.
