I'm using DWM on Void Linux. The file dialog window used by GUI applications (Inkscape, Firefox, Audacity to name a few) is a bit of annoyance: missing buttons (OK, I can Enter or Esc), tiny font, no thumbnails, no preview. Picking a photo for upload is quite a hurdle, for instance.

Is that an inevitable trade-off of using a lean window manager, or is there a solution?

  • Can you please clarify a bit more? Perhaps a screenshot? I have never used DWM myself, but presumably it has some settings and themes or some way of customizing it, so explaining that setup would also be helpful. Commented Mar 4 at 15:59
  • @terdon The only way to customize DWM is to change the source written in C (by applying a patch, for instance, or editing a header file), and recompile it. My question adequately describes the default behavior of file picker menu. If you'd use DWM, you'd recognize the problem, too, I think. Commented Mar 4 at 21:46

Figured it out.

Switch to floating windows mode with [ALT]+f, and then just resize the window by using [Alt] + right mouse button and/or move the window.

Interestingly, even after switching to back tiled mode, the file dialog remains floated (with Firefox) and maintains the last position. And not just in firefox. It seems to be inherited by other apps!

And it turns out, there's a preview pane on the right. So, for some reason, this window just doesn't fit the screen initially.
