    THANK YOU both! I was on trying to upgrade the kernel and look in that direction, but not keeping the current version. So I misunderstood @tom-yan 's hint. Absolutely did not suspect package_update as being the issue. Do you have any idea of the root cause of this issue? Like what happens during the upgrade, such that the tun device becomes unavailable?   • The short answer is basically that kernel package updates require a reboot (hence why it was working after rebooting). You're not actually using the new kernel until you reboot. Commented Sep 15 at 21:05
