    A minute past the message that it's safe to unplug, following my experience USB sticks can still be writing internally after the OS gives the 'safe' signal. Commented Mar 10 at 14:44

    If it's being used in Windows have you disabled the Fast Startup "feature"? Make sure to do that and try again. Commented Mar 10 at 14:59
  • Is "eject" another name for "unmount"? If not, I wonder if "eject" is more like pulling a USB device out of the socket - and this would explain the unclean unmount Commented Mar 10 at 15:15
  • @ChrisDavies I think they're referring to the "eject symbol" (same as on your CD player) next to the drive symbol in nemo. That triggers udisks2 errr I think it's called power-off endpoint?? Commented Mar 10 at 16:53
