    If it's not from APT then it probably isn't something you can just install - you'll need to compile and install it yourself. And then it'll start getting confused with APT-based packages. It's simplest to just find APT / .debs for whatever you need as far as you can. Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 11:59

    @Rup Plus if a software doesn't have a deb package you probably shouldn't install it, since it's either something deprecated, or bleeding edge, or incompatible with apt-based distributions. Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 12:05

    Once you get enough experience with building/installing software, you can just create your own packages. Please be sure to provide feedback to the upstream provider! Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 14:50
