8Offtopic. But the simple trick is to never install anything outside of the package management system.Šimon Tóth– Šimon Tóth2011-02-23 11:58:45 +00:00Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 11:58

1If it's not from APT then it probably isn't something you can just install - you'll need to compile and install it yourself. And then it'll start getting confused with APT-based packages. It's simplest to just find APT / .debs for whatever you need as far as you can.Rup– Rup2011-02-23 11:59:36 +00:00Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 11:59

2@Rup Plus if a software doesn't have a deb package you probably shouldn't install it, since it's either something deprecated, or bleeding edge, or incompatible with apt-based distributions.Šimon Tóth– Šimon Tóth2011-02-23 12:05:50 +00:00Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 12:05

3Once you get enough experience with building/installing software, you can just create your own packages. Please be sure to provide feedback to the upstream provider!jsbillings– jsbillings2011-02-23 14:50:14 +00:00Commented Feb 23, 2011 at 14:50

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. shell-script), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
