  • Thanks. Could you clarify though when a library that is 32 bit or 64 bit will be placed into lib as opposed to it's corresponding lib<qual> folder? I didn't quite get your explanation. Commented May 5, 2013 at 0:40
  • The primary purpose of /lib is to contain libraries for tools that are in /bin and /sbin. Given that /lib can contain a mix of both 32-bit & 64-bit libraries. I'll add this comment to the answer as well! Commented May 5, 2013 at 1:21

    libx32 is for x32. You can use the file utility with the libraries in these directories to see the difference. Commented Feb 21, 2018 at 17:43
