Did you actually try this, or is this just a theoretical treatise? For our github.com/fsfw-dresden/usb-live-linux I would like to do this..

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~

put returns between paragraphs
for linebreak add 2 spaces at end

backtick escapes `like _so_`
quote by placing > at start of line
