  • Why echo "$cmd" | bash instead of bash -c "$cmd"? For that matter, what is $cmd?  Is it so exotic and/or dynamic that you can’t just write it as a command (possibly with variable(s) as arguments)? Commented Sep 14, 2018 at 3:13
  • I will just change it to a literal command - I guess eval $cmd, bash -c "$cmd" and echo "$cmd" | bash all behave slightly differently? Commented Sep 14, 2018 at 6:35
