I get 'You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies:' and when i run 'apt-get -f install' as they suggest, i get a bunch of waiting and then 'connection timed out' message.john-jones– john-jones2012-08-08 15:30:46 +00:00Commented Aug 8, 2012 at 15:30

It seems like you are not connected to the internet on that machine. And your apt-get is possibly broken. I am no Debian expert to be able to help you there.darnir– darnir2012-08-08 15:37:23 +00:00Commented Aug 8, 2012 at 15:37

Have your previously added any PPA's and then removed them? That seems to be the most common cause for the above error. Also, run 'sudo apt-get -f install'. It seems many people tend to forget adding the sudo.darnir– darnir2012-08-08 15:47:34 +00:00Commented Aug 8, 2012 at 15:47

I ran it with a sudo, the solution in the end was to go to a friends house and format it there with the ubuntu gui. But this answer is a useful future reference.john-jones– john-jones2012-08-08 19:15:12 +00:00Commented Aug 8, 2012 at 19:15

RiserFS is not suppported any more on some major distributions. JFS and XFS can be too new for some distributions, ext2 is too old. My best bet is good old ext3.Nils– Nils2012-08-08 20:08:04 +00:00Commented Aug 8, 2012 at 20:08

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. shell-script), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
