@Chris sorry, I didn't see the question in your reply. nfs is similar to samba in that it's a protocol for transferring files, although it is a bit older and isn't in use in as many places as samba. Personally I would discourage its use as I have had undesirable experiences with it, not to mention the fact that it is nearly unusable on Windows. I mentioned it just because it has similar behavior to what you proposed in that it is mounted in a directory on your filesystem. I have stuck with samba after switching and I suggest you remain with it.

I realized that the functionality it's giving me now might be better, as this way I can keep things like the roms folder (or a web server, if I like), open in addition to the external hard drive, to one account that I use, while only showing the HDD on something like my girlfriend's laptop, who just wants access to backed up stuff. Summary: that's great! Thanks a bunch. For my own future reference, you mentioned nfs with root file systems. Is that a NAS competitor that behaves differently? | |
