    It's also important to remember that – unless sourced with . or source – a script is executed by separate bash process and has its own environment. For this reason, anything that modifies the shell environment (e.g. functions, variables, etc.) will not persist in the shell environment from which you run the script. Commented Mar 5, 2015 at 11:02
