fdisk is not kosher, you delete the existing partition and (re)create it with a bigger size, then grow the filesystem. Now that has to be done in rescue mode if it involves the main partition. I think I have an URL somewhere.Rui F Ribeiro– Rui F Ribeiro2015-11-16 14:09:28 +00:00Commented Nov 16, 2015 at 14:09

Added the URL to the answer, and for the sake of completeness for LVM too.Rui F Ribeiro– Rui F Ribeiro2015-11-16 14:11:37 +00:00Commented Nov 16, 2015 at 14:11

ah ok this makes sense. Sucks as i didnt want to loose what i had copied over to the 20gb partition. No harm though this allowed me to create a single large partition. thanks for your helpDan Hastings– Dan Hastings2015-11-16 17:01:46 +00:00Commented Nov 16, 2015 at 17:01

I do remember there are some step missing of the reside2fs text though....for people using some journaled filesystems, you have to disable journaling before the resize, and enable it again after the resizeRui F Ribeiro– Rui F Ribeiro2015-11-16 18:29:41 +00:00Commented Nov 16, 2015 at 18:29

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. shell-script), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
