Apr 18, 2011 at 22:54 comment added Juliano It is not a bug, neither in GNOME, nor in Xorg. This is intended behavior. Right Alt is AltGr, not the same as the left Alt. It just so happens that U.S. English has no use for AltGr, so if it is the only keyboard layout loaded, it is mapped to the same modifier as left Alt, for compatibility with really old systems.
Apr 18, 2011 at 21:28 comment added deuberger Okay, that makes more sense, but I don't understand why the mapping should be updated based on my current layout? Is this a GNOME or xorg bug or am I still not getting it? I understand the technical behavior now, I just don't understand the why behind it.
Apr 18, 2011 at 20:11 comment added Juliano @deuberger: Yes, it is likely that simply adding the layout as available will revert the right Alt key to its original meaning. The right-Alt-same-as-left-Alt is an exception that only makes sense if only U.S. English is used (and that is for backwards compatibility). If you add other layouts, it implies that you will use them. The modifier mapping and keyboard layout are achieved in different layers inside the xkb code.
Apr 18, 2011 at 18:10 comment added deuberger just like I told Caleb, the problem is when I'm not actually using the layout. I don't see why simply enabling the layout should cause a problem if it's not being used at the moment, but maybe I'm misunderstanding how linux keymaps work?
