I have experience some similar forms too and I agree with Michael here that it is something you have to become used to, however if combined with a confirmation message upon browsing away when the data is not yet autosaved then I think it seems okay to me.

Don’t use edits to reply to the author

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~
