- "The Grand Master is to take a Padawan. This is a rare honor."
- ―Tera Sinube
Grand Master or Grandmaster, also known as Grand Jedi Master, was a title generally bestowed on the oldest and wisest Jedi. Whereas the Master of the Order served as leader of the Jedi High Council, the Grand Master was the head of the Jedi Order. The title was shared by Jedi Masters Xo Lahru, Pra-Tre Veter, and Yoda during the High Republic Era. After Veter's capture by the Nihil pirates, Ry Ki-Sakka was appointed in his place, before Veter was ultimately executed by the Nihil. Yoda continued to serve as the Grand Master in the final years of the Galactic Republic, and was one of the few survivors of the Great Jedi Purge that commenced near the end of the Clone Wars.
Roles and powers
- "Count Dooku was Yoda's apprentice, and Count Dooku has fallen to the dark side."
"All of us have apprenticed to Master Yoda. He cannot be held accountable for Dooku's descent." - ―Ki-Adi-Mundi and Obi-Wan Kenobi
The Grand Master oversaw the Jedi Order.[3] The title of Grand Master was generally reserved for the oldest and wisest living Jedi Master. It was distinct from the office of Master of the Order, the holder of which led the Jedi High Council.[6] However, it was possible for a single individual to hold both titles at the same time.[7] The Grand Master would humbly teach the most junior members of the Order, younglings, completing the circle of Jedi training.[8] According to Tera Sinube, it was rare for a Grand Master to train his own Padawan and was therefore regarded as an honor.[4] Sometimes, the Jedi Order had multiple Grand Masters simultaneously.[9]
History
- "For 800 years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained."
- ―Yoda
During the High Republic Era, at the time of the Great Hyperspace Disaster,[9] several Jedi shared the rank of Grand Master, including Masters Xo Lahru,[11] Yoda,[9] and Pra-Tre Veter,[12] who attended the dedication of the Starlight Beacon.[9] Jedi Master Ry Ki-Sakka also attained the title after the death of Veter.[13]
By the time of the Invasion of Naboo,[14] two hundred years after the Great Disaster,[15] the still-living Yoda was the sole holder of the rank of Grand Master.[7] Yoda had trained generations of Jedi for eight centuries,[10] and continued as Grand Master through the Clone Wars.[7]
During the conflict in which Yoda and other members of the Order led the Grand Army of the Republic as Jedi Generals, Ki-Adi-Mundi became concerned about Yoda's state of mind, given the Grand Master's role in training Count Dooku prior to Dooku's descent to the dark side of the Force. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi countered that every Jedi in their time had been apprenticed to the Grand Master, and therefore dismissed the notion that Yoda was responsible for Dooku's actions as a Sith Lord.[5] After the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious managed to kill the majority of Jedi throughout the galaxy, the Grand Master went into exile on the planet Dagobah.[16]

Lucasfilm to Launch Star Wars: The High Republic Publishing Campaign in 2021 on StarWars.com (backup link) states that the events of Star Wars: The High Republic, including the Great Hyperspace Disaster, take place about two hundred years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

- ↑ The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness establishes that Ry Ki-Sakka was appointed Grand Master after Pra-Tre Veter was captured by the Nihil. The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 depicts Veter still being with the Jedi Order at the time Azlin Rell is brought before the Jedi High Council, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 229 BBY. As The High Republic Character Encyclopedia also dates Veter's death to 229 BBY, he must have been captured in the same year, and Ki-Sakka must have also therefore been appointed Grand Master in the same year.
