In the end, I have done it this way, but to me, it feels more like a workaround. But thanks for your answer. I will mark it as solved, because (sadly) it seems that there is no better solution.

Thank you so much for this answer!!! Trying to find a way to get the background color with the documentation they give is practically impossible. Didn't realize you had to set background-color to mat-color($background, card); I thought it was just mat-color($background). You have saved me thank you.
