You don't answer the question, but I think the question itself is more of a XY-Problem. And you show a solution for the normal usecase and your explanations are extensive, thanks!

@jeb Thank you. It is nice to get such a reply from another batch file expert like you. I added now also two code examples to answer the question although Angus Comber has not really asked a specific question regarding his code.
