When doing this, I now get a "0" to print for the last echo statement. however I expect the value to be 1 not zero. Also, why the use of export? I assume that forces it into the environment?

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~

like so

for linebreak add 2 spaces at end

backtick escapes `like _so_`
quote by placing > at start of line
to make links (use https whenever possible)
