People think referees just show up, blow the whistle, and walk off the field. But what they don’t see is the sweat, the soreness, the discipline, and the long hours it takes to keep up with the game. Being a referee isn’t just about knowing the rules it’s about being mentally sharp and physically ready to make split-second decisions under pressure.
As the youngest assistant referee in the Suriname Major League, I’ve learned early that fitness is one of the most important tools in this game. If I’m out of breath, I lose focus. If I lose focus, I make mistakes. And in football, one bad call can change everything.

My Weekly Routine
Balancing refereeing, work, school, and training isn’t easy but this is what you do when you really love the sport and don’t want to make excuses.
⸻
Why Referees Need to Train Like Athletes
We run almost as much as players during a match, sometimes even more but we don’t get substituted. We don’t stop. And we don’t get a coach yelling from the sidelines to keep us in the game. That’s why fitness matters.
• Speed helps me keep up with fast breaks
• Endurance keeps my mind sharp in the final minutes
• Strength prevents injury and builds confidence
• Focus makes sure I see what others miss
Refereeing is about reading the game, staying calm under pressure, and reacting fast and all of that becomes harder if your body isn’t ready.
⸻
Training with Two Teams
I don’t train alone I’ve got two strong teams behind me that help me stay sharp and ready for anything on the field.
Official Referee Training
Every Friday evening, I train with the Suriname Football Association under the guidance of Mijensa Rensch, Shekiel Jokil, and other experienced referees and assistants. These sessions are focused on:
• Sprinting and recovery drills
• Positioning exercises
• Game simulation situations
• Rule updates and decision-making under pressure

This is where I level up my referee IQ learning from professionals who’ve walked the path before me. Everyone there is serious about growth, and the energy pushes me to keep improving every week.

Elite Atlas Training
Outside of the official training, I also work with a private group led by Sully a trainer who doesn’t play around when it comes to discipline and development. We train like full-time athletes.
Our elite crew includes:
• Igwele, who handles content and business moves
• Brythan, the TikTok specialist and powerhouse
• Tim from PVV
• Ivie and Shaquille, cousins of Brythan
• Jehudi, the youngest and most hungry out the group he plays for Transvaal
We mix strength training, conditioning, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and even sparring sessions. We help each other stay accountable and improve physically, mentally, and emotionally.
“With both groups, I’m growing every week one sharpens my skill, the other builds my strength.”

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re a player, referee, student, or just someone chasing goals your body is your foundation. Take care of it. Train it. Respect it.
There are days I wake up tired. Days where I question if it’s all worth it. But every drop of sweat brings me closer to who I want to become.
Are you training for where you are or for where you want to be?
