    A particular advantage of using the pointer as an opaque type is that the structure itself can change between library versions and you don't need to recompile the callers. Commented Oct 19, 2017 at 21:54

    @Barmar: Indeed, ABI Stability is the huge selling point of C, and it would not be as stable without opaque pointers. Commented Oct 20, 2017 at 12:06
