    As someone who regularly works with such data sets, I would find such a catalog very helpful. Being able to query the meta data set would help one quickly answer all sorts of questions. Examples: "what sets have data available from 2000-2010", "which data sets are presented by ZIP code", etc. I also might want to regularly check for updates and automatically download updated data to a local database for research.
