Feb 7, 2013 at 22:29 comment added Caleb I think a better question would be: Why are arguments called "actual parameters"? This formal/actual parameter business seems to have been made up by someone who didn't know that the name for "actual parameter" is argument.

Feb 7, 2013 at 21:34 comment added Rachel @Mehrdad Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize that. Can you edit your question to re-add that, and perhaps even include a short code sample illustrating which you are referring to? The two are often confused, and honestly I've never thought twice about the fact parameters are different than arguments until I read this question today.

Feb 7, 2013 at 21:18 comment added user541686 Just a note regarding the edit, I put the word "actual" in there to distinguish them from "formal" parameters. Otherwise there are going to be a million people thinking I didn't understand the difference, who will try to answer the wrong question.

Wanted to re-tag as history, and fixed up grammar a bit. Am voting to reopen.

Feb 7, 2013 at 19:38 comment added Anthony Pegram It comes from math. Obviously, the next question is "so where did the term originate in math?"
Feb 7, 2013 at 19:36 comment added bummi parameters means the declaration, arguments then values used.
