UITableViewControllermechanics seem quite strange to me, so I can relate to the problem. I'm actually glad I useMonoTouch, becauseMonoTouch.Dialogspecifically makes it that much easier to work with tables on iOS. In the meantime, I'm curious what other, more knowledgeable people might suggest here...
