would this work for 300, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1? I ask because the way you describe ("one pair at a time") it sounds like this will end with both kids owning 3 books each, while solution should be 300 and 15, 4, 3, 2, 1

Read the problem again, @gnat. One book from each of the pairs must go to each of the kids.
