It come from the BCPL programming language - one of the precursors of C.

+1 for pling. I miss pling. It was the official name of the "!" operator in BBC BASIC.

This goes back to the Cambridge origins of the BBC microcomputer and the fact that around that time (I am of that vintage) the computer science course at the university involved a lot of work in BCPL. I assume that they carried the name over.
