Ernie explains that he's waiting for a very important call from Bert, urging the telephone to ring. Cookie Monster enters the room and asks to call his mommy. Ernie is reluctant, but agrees on the condition that he make it a short call. Cookie Monster reaches his mother, identifying himself as "Tiny," and proceeds to tell her all about his day at school.
They played show-and-tell in class, so he begins listing all the things his classmates brought: a peanut butter sandwich, a ping-pong ball, a six-note xylophone, a Millard Fillmore postage stamp, a set of orange crayons, an imitation plastic hot dog, chocolate-covered mushrooms, a pearl button, and a stuffed orangutan. All the while, Ernie has been reminding him that he said it would be a short call.
In part 2, Cookie Monster tells his mommy about after school where they all jumped rope in the playground. He explains that he won because everyone else jumped a short time, while he jumped a long time. Ernie uses these prompts to point out that he's been on the phone a long time. Cookie Monster ignores him and repeats to his mommy how everyone counted his jumps. He begins at 1 and trails off at 16...
In part 3, Cookie Monster's counting has reached 4,614, at which point he says that he missed the jump rope. Ernie is relieved, especially when Cookie Monster announces that that's all he has to say. However, he's now invited his mommy to tell him about her day and asking about his brother Fred. Unable to let this continue, Ernie offers him a cookie if he'll get off the phone. Cookie Monster dumps the box of cookies into his mouth, and continues talking on the phone.
Cookie Monster wraps up his call in the final segment, says goodbye to his mommy, and hangs up the phone. Ernie is exasperated, "Do you realize that was probably the longest phone call in history? I didn't think you'd ever finish with that telephone." Proving that he hasn't finished with it, Cookie Monster eats the receiver. As Ernie struggles to get it back, the phone rings. Bert can be heard on the line from inside Cookie Monster's tummy. Ernie shouts into Cookie Monster's mouth explaining that he's going to have to speak up because they have a bad connection.
