District: Mallowhallow

Personality:

End of game spoilers warning!

Sissel starts our story as a literal lost soul. He has forgotten who he is. All he knows is that he is dead. All he cares about is finding his lost identity.

Sissel's obsession isn't surprising. When Sissel was just a kitten, he pleaded for someone to look at him, for someone to reach out a hand to him. To the world at that point he might as well have been a ghost. But as the game begins he's in an even worse position not just because he's dead, but because he doesn't even know what he looks like. How is anyone supposed to acknowledge him if he can't even acknowledge himself?

For this reason, the first time these events play out Sissel lets the dead stay dead in favor of chasing his own identity. The second time, a little manipulation pushes him in the right direction, and once he is on the trail we see that Sissel is someone who cares about others despite his repeated claims that his own identity is all that matters to him.

Sissel initially follows Lynne because she is a likely witness to his murder, but even when she says she can't promise to help, he just proposes they "use" one another. Once there's video evidence that she's the one who murdered him, he still thwarts fate and returns her to life. His mystery still isn't solved he says, when asked if he's going to get his revenge on her, but it's clear he is not comfortable with the idea of revenge itself. Anger is not an emotion he shows at any point despite being freshly murdered.

Sissel likes the bold and silly people he comes across and feels easy empathy for their relationships, and so it becomes natural to save them. It doesn't matter if the dead themselves protest against him; Sissel will quietly counter their arguments and save them anyway. Sissel's abilities let him watch people undetected, listen in on their problems, and grow sympathy for them without their ever knowing he is there.

In some ways Sissel is always a ghost to the world. He stands back and observes and comments with a bit of a detached air whether or not anyone present can hear him. The scene of him with his family at the end of the game has the same feel to it. Sissel may now be alive again and part of a family, but he is also watching the chaos from above. He is his own island, part of the whole and yet distinct, loving and loved yet independent. He is forever trapped in the instant before his death, and he will live on long on after everyone else has died in some way he cannot prevent. But he is happy to straddle this line between being part of the world and being separate from it.

Questions/Comments/Concerns:
Sissel is immortal and all injuries to him heal immediately. He also has the abilities to possess and manipulate objects, to travel over landlines, and to talk to ghosts.
