1Underlying DBMS error (-51) = An error was returned from the database that was not recognized by ArcSDE or the client application. Check the DBMS logs for more information.Mapperz– Mapperz ♦2012-02-28 22:14:23 +00:00Commented Feb 28, 2012 at 22:14

"upgrade" really isn't the right term. You need to first install SDE. ArcSDE requires a repository of db tables which are created when you install ArcSDE. "upgrade" applies when you already have an SDE GDB and you want to move from one version to another.Derek Swingley– Derek Swingley2012-02-29 06:18:42 +00:00Commented Feb 29, 2012 at 6:18

YOu need to install SDE, then run the create schemas sql, to create the system tables, then you need to perform the post install, which populates the SDE schema system tables. It looks like you have done none of thisHairy– Hairy2012-02-29 08:01:56 +00:00Commented Feb 29, 2012 at 8:01

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. arcgis-desktop), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
