“Bless me father for I have sinned, it’s been fifteen years since my last confession.”
-
He still remembers that night on the beach, where in a crazed state he’d kidnapped Aaron. He remembers Claire’s screams of terror and John’s hard knuckles as they smacked into his cheek, once, twice, three times.
“I’m not going to hurt him Claire.”
“You’re hurting me Charlie.”
-
He still remembers the first time he saw them kiss, pressed against a tree in the jungle. He remembers Claire’s spindly fingers digging into the curve of John’s back, and her breathy sigh of pleasure.
“How could you do this to me Claire?”
“I don’t owe you anything Charlie.”
-
He still remembers the day Locke officially moved into Claire’s tent. He remembers Claire’s squeals of laughter as she rocked Aaron in her arms and beamed at John in that special way that should have been reserved for him.
“He’s only going to hurt you Claire.”
“Get the hell out of my tent and my life Charlie.”
-
He still remembers when he overheard that Claire was pregnant with John’s child. He remembers her tears of joy as she sat cradled in Locke’s arms, the two of them grinning madly as Jack delivered the news.
“Why are you doing this to me Claire?”
“I love him, not you Charlie.”
-
He still remembers when Claire gave birth to little Caitlin. He remembers how Claire simply glowed of life as she, John and the baby all entered the camp the next day, eerily reminiscent of himself and Claire after Aaron’s birth.
“She should’ve been mine Claire.”
“Well she isn’t, and she never will be Charlie.”
-
He still remembers the night Aaron was taken. He remembers Claire’s desperate screams as she searched frantically for the son she’d never find.
“I told you this would happen Claire.”
“Just leave me alone Charlie.”
-
He still remembers when John came back empty handed from the search for Aaron. He remembers Claire’s disappointed look of resignation and the way she kissed John with a fevor that left Charlie hard for hours.
“I’m sorry Claire.”
“No, you’re not Charlie.”
-
He still remembers stumbling across the heroin, tucked away with the guns in the hatches safe. He remembers the thrill of adrenaline as he stared up at the innocent looking statuettes, and how quickly the thought of blonde curls and green eyes were banished immediately.
“Is there any way I could help you Claire?”
“How about leaving John and I in peace Charlie?”
-
He still remembers the pure high he felt as he snorted the heroin. He remembers how that turned into pure rage as he watched John fondle Claire, his Claire.
“John, get the fuck away from Claire.”
“Oh my god, what the hell are you doing Charlie?”
-
He still remembers the bang as the gun went off, and the thud as John hit the sand. He remembers the smell of gunfire and the sound of Claire’s weepy shouts.
“I had to do it, you left me no choice Claire.”
“Stay away from me; you’re a sick fuck, you know that Charlie?”
-
Fifteen years is a long time to be living in sin. As the Father promises the Son that he’ll be in his prayers, the Son takes his gun to his forehead.
“I won’t hurt him Claire.”
“You’re hurting me Charlie.”
With a bang as the gun goes off and a thud as he hits the floor, the Son is no more.
