LJ thinks Anorexia is a lifestyle and encouraging it is protected by freedom of speech.

I so knew it!

Somebody reported a pro-anorexia (even typing this makes me sick!) community to LJ abuse - now have a wild guess what their reply was...!

"(...) We fully recognize that anorexia is harmful and that these communities dedicated to maintaining a lifestlye that has the potential to cause harm. Speaking strictly from a safety and protective stance, we would of course prefer if none of our users participated in any way in potentially harmful and dangerous activities, and if those communities had no reason to exist. However, we still believe that, apart from being protected as free speech, it is the lesser harm to permit them all. (...)"

Let me sum this up: fictional characters drawn in fictional sexual situations are so dangerous that the artists are banned for life and their accounts purged. Real people discussing life-threatening methods to lose weight are protected by "free speech".

But wait, it gets better.

"(...) We understand that a great many people find such communities extremely disturbing; we frequently receive requests to shut them down. What we would recommend, with the greatest respect, is that those users simply avoid all contact with communities of this nature. (...)"

I'm all for "discussion" and "support", but for crying out loud - what kind of people are working at LJ?

Dear LJ,

"With the greatest respect" - where is the artistic merit in this ?

"Don't like it, don't read it" - yes, that's a great policy, indeed. Now if only you'd apply it to everybody...

Sickening.

Edited to add even more stupidity by a LJ employee on the matter. "Pro Ana" doesn't mean "supporting each other to heal and overcome the illness". It means "how can we lose even more weight?" They consider anorexia as a lifestyle - but hey, so does LJ...
