Funchal, the picturesque capital, set on sheltered hillsides overlooking a wide bay, is the tourist centre of Madeira and the ideal base for exploring the island.Elsewhere on Madeira there is a wealth of spectacular scenery to enjoy, a selection of restaurants, organised levada walks, and you can also make boat trips to the tiny Desertas Islands or the nearby island of Porto Santo with its long golden sandy beaches.

With views of Madeira's rocky coastline and the city of
Funchal laid out invitingly below my balcony, there wasn't a chance of a relaxing break despite my room at the Allegro Madeira coming with a pillow menu and a welcome note: "You lie down, the body relaxes, the energy reviews and the mind travels."
