What is Conjugation?
Many different types of words take inflections - that is, their endings change, depending on how they are used in a sentence. When nouns or adjectives take inflections, we call that process declension. When we are talking about verbs, this process is called conjugation.
In most languages changes to verbs fall into the following seven categories:
- person - whether a person or thing is speaking (1st person), being spoken to (2nd person), or being spoken about (3rd person)
- number - how many people or things are concerned (singular/plural)
- gender - the grammatical gender (he/she/it) of the people or things concerned
- tense - when the action of the verb takes place - the past, present, or future
- aspect - how the action of the verb takes place - all at once, continuously, or over an extended period
- mood - whether the verb is expressing facts (indicative); commands (imperative); or hypotheticals (subjunctive)
- voice - whether the grammatical subject (person or thing) performs the action (active) or is the person or thing the action happens to (passive)
Some languages have even more categories - with our new language, Georgian, having one of the most complex verb systems in the world.
