a change in the weekly chat
Over the past four weeks or so, we've been having major problems with Yahoo Messenger: I'm not able to invite people into the room, people get kicked out of the room or Messenger for no reason, or they can't see the conversations of other people in the room. I've been exploring a couple of other options, and I think I've come up with a good one: Gmail.
We can do group chat in gmail, and you don't have to download any programs or worry about whether it will work with your operating system (I think some of our problems have been because people are using different platforms for YM). As far as I know, the chat room capacity is unlimited. Plus, anyone can invite anyone else in. It's not as pretty as YM, but I think it will be a lot more stable.
I'd like to try it this Saturday. If it doesn't work out, we can always go back to Messenger or look into some other options. So, what you need to do if you want to chat:
1) Get a gmail account. It's free, and you don't have to download and install anything. Go to http://gmail.google.com and click on "Create an account". If you already have a gmail account, you can skip this step.
2) email me at snycock (at) gmail (dot) com from your gmail account, so I can add you to my contacts list.
3) on Saturday, at chat time, log in to http://gmail.google.com with your account. I'll see you and invite you into the chat room. Feel free to email me if you don't get an invitation right away.
I'll make the usual reminder post tomorrow and repeat this, but I wanted to give folks a bit of a head up. Thanks for being patient and being willing to try something new!
