Chapter XXX: The Goths are coming

Read it here or here.

1) Good quotes

Slim pickings again, though I was amused by the failure of the Pelagian controversy to engage the masses:
92 The Pelagian doctrine, which was first agitated A.D. 405, was condemned, in the space of ten years, at Rome and Carthage. St. Augustin fought and conquered; but the Greek church was favourable to his adversaries; and (what is singular enough) the people did not take any part in a dispute which they could not understand.
2) Summary

The Goths invade Italy successfully, and Stilicho does his best to hold them back but is in the end brought bown by his own side.

3) Points arising

Saving for the next chapter: I think that this and the previous chapter are best seen as extensive scene-setting for the sack of Rome.

4) Coming next

Alaric and the Goths are approaching Rome; the year is approaching 410. Read it here or here.
