It was hard keeping still while I watched my prey come closer. Slowly, it wandered towards me; unaware it was being watched, unaware that its life was perilously close to ending. I twitched and hunkered down further into the long grass and fought to stop my tail moving, and giving away my position.

“There you are, what have I told you about catching birds?” Strong hands reached down, pulled me out of the bush, and into a rough embrace.

“Miaoww,” I complained, wriggling around to watch the bird I was stalking fly onto the telegraph wire. He chucked me under the chin, tucked me into the crook of his arm and carried me inside the house. Another day, bird, I thought, looking at the sparrow.

"Mr Gibbs, that cat of yours has been in my house again!" I twisted desperately in the grip of the woman next door, trying to get free.

"Ah, sorry about that,” he said, glaring at me. "Let me have her and I'll be out of your way." I snuggled into his arms and watched him eyeing the brightly coloured cards spread over the floor.

"My Tarot set," she explained, picking them up. "I was experimenting when that animal barged in here. Look, they are all the Rider-Waite design. Hmm, as it was your animal that upset them, I suppose they relate to you now. Lets have a look"

I could feel Gibbs tensing as she prattled on, and he had started to sidle towards the door when she suddenly thrust a card under his nose "Look, the Wheel of Fortune; maybe it was fate that brought you here tonight?"

"Pfftt," I sniggered, as Gibbs again made a beeline for the door. She would be batting her eyelashes next!

The devil made me do it, I thought, remembering the other Tarot card the lady next door had insisted on showing my human, the night before.

“Oh the devil, Mr Gibbs,” she had tittered, “Must watch out for that, and not let your animal instincts take over.”

I'll show her animal instincts, I thought as I carefully dragged the little corpse into her living room. This will teach her to try worming her way into his affections. He's mine and no one else's.
