Summary: They beat the First, but it went a bit differently.
A/N: Okay, I am flipping the script a bit. The First was defeated. Faith wore the amulet. Sunnydale was ruined, but did not cave in (Faith, not being as powerful as Spike, did not take it all out – my theory). Angel did bring the amulet as before, but he did not take over W&H. Angel is Spike’s sire. The rest will be in the story.
Got to Previously On World Made New if you need a refresher or need to get caught up.
This is a prezzie for

Chapter 52
Carla marched across the backyard carrying a bowl filled with fresh antelope meat, covered with a cloth from the kitchen. She’d actually changed from her usual attire of T-shirt and jeans into one of the nice summer dresses her mother had given her for her birthday in May. The whole thing reminded her of her Aunt Lily bringing over her delicious peach cobbler for dessert at one of their family dinners...minus the stake clutched in her free hand.
She stopped at the door and took a deep breath, steeling herself for possible rejection, and knocked. To her relief, it was the small red-haired girl who answered, her eyes friendly yet slightly puzzled.
“Hi. I…” She lifted the bowl as if to explain. “Since you guys are cooking, I thought I’d bring some of the tasty meat over.”
“Oh, yeah. Thanks.” Willow took the bowl and stood back so the girl could enter. “Do you wanna come in?”
“Yeah, sure.” Carla stepped up and inside, sparing a little wave for Cordelia and Amy before glancing around. The motor home was pretty huge, small for all the people that they had with them, but still a mammoth of a vehicle. “Wow. How much gas does this puppy take?”
“A lot. Lucky for us the pumps still work at lot of gas stations. Otherwise…” Willow didn’t finish that sentence, her thoughts drifting to the millions of people who died and left all these resources free for the taking. They hadn’t been very lucky at all.
“So Carla,” Cordelia interrupted, smiling at their guest. “How does it feel? Being all chosen?” Asking Buffy about it had never been an option. The two of them had never been close by any stretch of the definition and Cordelia spent a good deal of the time resenting the slayer for bringing so much strife to their school. She was also forced to acknowledge the fact that many more of her classmates would have been dead had Buffy not been a part of their lives. Now she mostly felt bereaved, missing the almost good-natured snark they had once shared.
Carla slid into the bench seat of the kitchenette before answering. “I’m not sure. I’m too old and the training really hasn’t been all that so I just feel like me still. Also I think the power’s been watered down or something, cause I didn’t even know those guys were vamps. Shouldn’t I know that?” She gazed up at Cordelia, her expression hopeful, like this woman would have all the answers that Jacob was too busy hating to provide.
“I know Buffy had her Spidey Sense. Do you feel anything at all when Spike or Angel is around?”
The young girl shook her head.
“Well, Faith, that’s the other slayer,” Willow chimed in. “She never could tell when a vampire was around. This one time, she saved this girl vamp from Spike, thinking Spike was trying to eat her.”
A frown fell over Carla’s features. “Wait, was Faith the slayer before Buffy?”
“No after,” Willow explained. “See Buffy died. Well she died twice…three times actually, but…”
Reaching out to give Willow’s hand a gentle squeeze, Cordelia finished for her. “In our sophomore year, Buffy died, drowned, but it was just for a moment and she was revived. But that was long enough for the spell that activates a new slayer to kick in and voila! We have Kendra the vampire slayer!”
“Okay wait. Who’s Kendra?”
“Right. Kendra was the first slayer after Buffy, but Spike’s whack-job girlfriend killed her so Faith was called. But Faith went all resident evil on us and sided with the Mayor, killed some people, tried to kill Angel, then Buffy stabbed her with a knife and put her in a coma until she woke up one day, cause slayer healing’s a bitch, switched bodies with Buffy and tried to killed her again, then she showed up in LA, tortured her ex-watcher, and gave me a horrendous black eye before Angel finally whipped her skanky ass.”
Carla blinked. “What?”
“Oh, heck no!” Cordelia groaned. “I’m not repeating that.” She took the carrots and onions that Amy chopped and dropped them in the pot.
“No! No… I think I got it all, just…wow!” The new slayer shook her head. “Why’d she go crazy like that?”
Cordelia asked herself the same question a lot. Not nightly anymore. She was self-centered enough to know that wasn’t productive. But still, it was weird to hear that parroted back to her…about someone else. Unlike her, Faith had been in control of her mind and body when she went on her evil spree. She made her choices knowing right from wrong. Despite the torture and attempts on their lives, Angel forgave her. He even visited the slayer regularly before Wesley initiated her escape. Eventually, Buffy and the other Scoobies had made their peace with her as well and accepted her back into the fold. And if they could forgive Faith, then maybe, Cordelia reasoned, Angel had truly forgiven her too.
Still the questions plagued her and having a legitimate excuse only lessened her guilt to a certain point. Because even though she was possessed, it still felt like her. Realizing that Carla was still waiting for an answer, Cordelia shrugged. “Who knows why anybody does anything?”
~~~*~~~
Angel sucked hard on the tough flesh one last time before shoving the carcass from his lap. He looked at the deer – and it was disturbing to him that he was just noticing exactly what sort of animal he’d been munching on – and frowned. The blood had been good, hot and salty with just a hint of instinctual fear, and that was a problem. Eating from the source, even an animal source, was getting to him. What would happen if he ever drank from a human again, he wondered as he stood up and dusted off his pants.
Controlling the demon had never been that easy for him. A century and more of having a soul and he still wanted to tear into soft flesh and wallow in blood as much as any normal vampire. He was inclined to blame this on the man he had been in life and felt doubly bothered. Not wanting to fall completely into a funk, he focused on his real mission for the night.
An upward glance gave him his bearings and he trudged through the small forest until he came across the road that had previously led them to the safehouse. Setting his pace at an easy trot, he headed south and after a few miles began to notice the signs of what had once meant civilization. Where there had been only dense trees along either side of the road, there were now old farmhouses, much like the council’s, sporadically spaced. Corn stalks were visible in one of the yards, signs of neglect apparent. He slowed and crept quietly up the front path and around the side of the house to get a better look.
Stepping closer, he examined the ears, noting that the corn inside was still ripening and looked fine. He was no expert on the vegetable, but thought they would soon be edible. He walked further and stooped down at another patch of greenery to find tomatoes, peppers and other plants growing rather wild. Curious, he felt the earth. The soil was damp. Too damp considering the lack of rain.
Angel glanced around, senses on alert, sniffing the air and listening for anything other than the sounds of nature. So far all he had smelled since getting away from the drama back at the safehouse was the faint scent of aging death. That was still in the air and he had seen the occasional rotted corpse to confirm it, but now that he was trying, he smelled smoke.
Someone, somewhere, had a fire going.
At first he thought the smell had to have been coming from his own group, but the direction was all wrong. Following the scent, he slowly walked farther south, concerned about what he might find – humans possibly, demons probably – either were dangerous these days and he was determined to be very careful.
Not much time had passed when he saw the glow of light in a window, firelight flickering against the glass. The house was as unimpressive as the next, only standing out because it wasn’t in complete darkness. He froze and was easily able to pick up on the sounds of quiet snoring and the enticing cadence that was a human heartbeat.
~~~*~~~
They walked in silence, purposely in the opposite direction that Angel had gone, exploring the terrain. Summer here was nice, the days hot and thankfully they didn’t have to go out in them, while the nights were warm and balmy. The quiet trek was what both vampires needed to clear their heads.
Wesley was busy listening to the sounds around him, nearly mesmerized by all that he could now sense. The soft gushing of moving water had him nudging Spike to veer to their right and follow. Soon they came across a small stream, the waters dark and glistening with moonlight.
“I was blind,” Wesley stated, his voice soft and human.
Spike settled onto a rock by the edge of the brook. “How’s that then?” He patted his pockets for his cigarettes, sighing when he determined that he’d left them in the motorhome. It was probably a good thing since he was running very low in supply.
“Before…I was blind. I thought I was enlightened and intelligent, but this…” He turned from gazing at the water to look at Spike. “How do you do it?”
“Do what?” Spike frowned.
Spreading his arms out akimbo, Wesley turned in a circle. “All this is crashing in on me. Every minute. Every second!” he hissed. “When Angel’s around it’s somewhat more tolerable. But, unless there’s blood pounding in a nice sweet vein, I’ve nothing to distract me from all this noise. How do you do it?”
Spike got up and walked over to him. He placed his hands on either side of Wesley’s face, letting his finger caress the slight stubble on his cheeks.
“Like this.” His lips brushed against Wesley’s, hesitantly at first, waiting to see if this was what he wanted.
Apparently it was because Wesley grabbed him by the back of his head to keep him from moving away. Spike opened his mouth and allowed Wesley in as his hands came around his slender back to press closer, hips grinding. The kiss went on and on, small gasps and whimpers cutting through the sound of water trickling by, until Spike tore away, panting. He stared into Wesley’s wild eyes and fought the strong urge to shove him down and fuck him raw.
“Best stop,” was all the blond managed to say. He absolutely hated how sex, just the thought of it sometimes, burned out his brain cells.
For Wesley, this was illuminating. He had experienced this particular feeling before when they had all played Angel’s games, but this confirmed it for him. The belonging he felt while being close to this creature was incomparable to anything he’d felt with his human family while alive, and was only exceeded by the gut churning fire he experienced when Angel laid his hands on him. It was no wonder Spike annoyed Angel as much as he did. Anything for his touch. Wesley thought he was beginning to understand that now. He stepped back, removed his shirt and set himself on the rock the other vampire had just vacated, gazing up at him through his overgrown and accidental bangs.
“Dawn is hours away, Spike. We’ve time for anything.”
Pretending to be put upon, Spike slipped right up to him and frowned until Wesley began nuzzling his nose into his denim covered groin.
“I can smell her on you.” He peered up, grinning much too happily. “You’ve shagged her? Finally?”
Unable to hide his amusement at this fledgling completely, Spike sighed to cover his faint smile. “A gentleman never tells. I know you know that, Wes.”
Wesley laughed and tugged at Spike’s belt buckle. “Fortunately for you, I’m no gentleman anymore.” He tore the zipper down roughly, ignoring his elder’s protest about the treatment of his clothing. Pleased to find neither boxers nor briefs, Wes slipped his hand around the stiffening cock and squeezed hard. He smiled as a flurry of curses fell from that mouth. “And neither are you.”
Pumping into Wesley hand, Spike’s eyes rolled back. “Still not telling,” he panted. “And still not gonna shag you.” All fun aside, he was Angel’s. They both were, and there would be no taking unless Daddy Said So.
But there was this.
This consisted of Wesley’s mouth swallowing him down as he shoved the denim further to his knees. He pulled back and slipped his tongue under the foreskin, swirling around the slit before pushing in lightly. Legs trembling already, Spike leaned forward, his hands falling on Wesley shoulders.
“Jesus, Wes...” he hissed, thrusting slowly into the welcoming mouth.
~~~*~~~
Collectively, they’d made stew. Surprisingly, it turned out pretty tasty and they all ate heartily before remembering that there was a houseful of children who might be hungry again. Carla carried the pot back to the kitchen in the house, accompanied by Willow who wanted to try to access the internet again. She also brought along a healing salve for Avery, if he was willing to try it.
That left Cordelia and Amy to clean up the mess. Amy who was staring at the other woman non-stop until finally…
“What?!” Cordelia slammed the dishcloth on the counter. “Do I have a visitor in my nose or something equally gross?”
Amy blinked at the outburst and shook her head. “No. No…I just…” she trailed off, still gaping, but this was more the bug under the microscope stare. “What’s going on between you and Spike?”
Caught off guard, it was Cordelia’s turn to blink – and stammer – until she regained some composure and stuck with the story Willow had been told. “I’m letting him feed.”
“Why?”
She walked to the cooler, opened it, and took a count. “Eight bags of blood left. Three vamps. You do the math.” Arms crossed, she dared Amy to challenge her logic.
Of course, Amy did just that. “There’s animals all around, livestock roaming free. They should be hunting that. Really, they should be corralling them and using them slowly. Why would you volunteer to be a…freaking blood cow when you don’t need to right now?” Amy continued to eye her closely. “Unless it’s something else.”
Cordelia glared and went back to wiping the counter down. “Of course it’s not something else. What else could it be? He was hungry. He fed. Willow knows about it so what do you care? No one’s asking you to donate.”
Amy sighed and got back to drying off the dishes. “Does she know how he looks at you? How you guys flirt and touch?”
Cordelia whirled around smiling, but her eyes were storm-filled. “Geez, Amy. Delusional much? Spike looks at everybody like that. He’ll flirt with a rock.”
Settling into the booth seating, Amy smiled back. “Yeah, maybe. He’s flirted with me so I get that. But it’s not the same because, you flirt back. When you think no one’s around, you let him touch you…everywhere Cordy. Have you had sex with him yet?”
“You know what? This conversation is over.” She turned back to her new task, fussing with the placement of their meager supply of spices.
Amy’s smile turned to wide-eyed wonder. “Oh my God. You have, haven’t you?” She laughed, loud and hard, before settling down. “Bet Willow doesn’t know that.”
“There’s nothing to know.”
Standing, Amy raised an eyebrow at the brunette. “Maybe I’ll let Willow decide that.” She started for the door, but was halted by Cordelia’s hand clamped around her arm.
“Don’t even think about it.”
“Why not? You’re just donating, right?”
“Yes!” Relieved, she relaxed her grip.
“And that’ll be my story. As long as I get what I want.”
Cordelia’s eyes narrowed. “Which is?”
Amy sat back down, nodding at the seat across from her. Cordy sat as well. “The way I see it, we have to leave. Soon. That bite Wesley took out of Avery didn’t win the vampires any votes. The last chat about it had those kids staying here and me with them by default. That aint happening.” She stared into Cordelia’s eyes. “And you’re gonna make sure of it.”
Before she could respond, the door was flung open and Angel burst in.
“I’ve found someone. A live person!”
