Monica: AKA Isobel. Has no memory of her past before meeting Pierre on the island. Recognizes Nyckia as her brother. After leaving the island though mysterious means, she finds herself enrolled in training to become the next Empress, which she does unanamously. She is a fair ruler, loved throughout the land, but finds herself leading a war against the evil goddess Marta. She relies heavily on her advisor Ankah, and doubts herself even though her people regard her as a strong ruler.
Pierre: Grew up in a quiet town in a distant part of the world. Was attacked when he was 17 by a mysterious boy, suffered back problems. He went to an island for vacationing and met Isobel, a girl his age, and the two quickly fell in love. She disappeared and a woman he had seen around his hometown offered him not only the chance to see her again, but also to cure his injuries, so he agreed, and found himself in the thrall of Marta. After accompanying her to find the mysterious "Nicholas" after a rebellion in her lands, he eventually becomes her top officer. Once in a position of military power, he finds that his opponent is none other than Isobel. Finds himself torn between his loyalty to Marta and his love for the girl.
Marta: Goddess of destruction. Goes by many names, and her real one, if any, is unknown even to the other gods. Proports to be older than the universe. She usually seems to be in high spirits, even when ordering a massacre.
Paeterson: Marta's other top officer besides Pierre. Is as sadistic as his mistress, and with a vendetta against anyone who would dare oppose her. Despite their equal rank, despises Pierre.
Nyckia: Recognized as Monica's brother, although it is doubtful that they are actually related. He acts as occasional advisor to the empresses, and posesses mystic powers even for a magic user.
Ankah: Monica's advisor, a water nymph. Her memory isn't what it used to be, but she believes that she has served as advisor to all the empresses, back to the unknown first.
And those are the characters at the beginning of the story. There's more later, such as Soosan, Catherine Lansky, Jeanne, Yohann, and some that I'll have to think up new names for because I've had them for so long I've forgetten. I've got to go over a lot of stuff, such as why for a lot of things. There's a lot of whys going around my head since I've picked these guys up again.
