Johansonrobledo gmail - My friend, Allen Aston, used to recite this at beach fires since 1987. He turned me on to Shel's recitation on Dr. Demento around then but, pass the joint one too many times around a fire, and Allen would bust this out and recite it flawlessly. Allen passed this week and, in his honor, at his celebration of life this weekend I will carry on the tradition of taking one too many tokes and reciting this wonderful work. Next time you, too, take one too many send the smoke to heaven and think of Shel and my friend, 'Rainbow' Allen Aston. Resume Infinite Peace, my brother.

Pourshot - I enjoyed this poem very much during my rebellious days.  I read it so much I ended up memorizing it.  Today was the first time I have read it in years and had very few errors in my remembrance of it. The original copy I got out of a magazine and carried in my wallet was confiscated by a UK custom agent when I ended up passing through Diego Garcia in the early 80s.  I got the biggest kick out of buying "Where the Sidewalk Ends" for my Grandmother as a Christmas present.  She enjoyed it immensely, but I think her ardor would have been reduced greatly if she had known he also wrote this.  When she passed, in 1991, the book was returned to me and it still has the Halls lozenge wrapper she used for a bookmarker in it. All of Mr. Silverstein's work has brought great pleasure to me and I wish there was a way to let him know.  I did not know, but he passed May 10, 1999. Sad.
